Australia must protect territorial waters from illegal whaling

Prime Minister Turnbull needs to take far stronger action to protect Australia’s territorial waters from illegal whaling, Greens Senator for Tasmania Nick McKim says.

"Mr Turnbull should stop sitting on his hands and immediately send Border Force vessels to the Southern Ocean to restore the integrity of the our territorial waters including the Australian Whale Sanctuary," Senator McKim said.

“They should be prepared to run Japan’s illegal whalers out of the Whale Sanctuary, and gather evidence for further international legal actions."

Turnbull bottles it over illegal whaling

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has bottled it once again by refusing to confront Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe over illegal whaling, Greens Senator for Tasmania Nick McKim says.

"Mr Turnbull has again shown he does not have the courage to speak up for the magnificent marine creatures being illegally slaughtered by Japan," Senator McKim said. 

"If only Mr Turnbull's politically driven obsession with border control extended to defending Australian waters from illegal whalers."

Turnbull needs to confront Abe over illegal whaling

Malcolm Turnbull must confront Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe about illegal whaling when the two leaders meet tomorrow, Greens Senator for Tasmania Nick McKim says.

"Prime Minster Turnbull needs to demand an immediate halt to Japan's illegal slaughter of these magnificent marine creatures," Senator McKim said.

"He should also demand the payment of the $1 million in Federal Court fines that Japan owes Australia."

"In opposition, the Liberals promised tough action against illegal whaling, but in government they've been completely missing in action."
