Dutton must guarantee health services for Manus Island

Immigration Minister Peter Dutton must immediately clarify the status of medical care available to people seeking asylum on Manus Island.

"We are hearing that there are no doctors working today in the detention centres on PNG due to International Health and Medical Service failing to properly register its medical practitioners with the Papua New Guinean government," Greens Immigration spokesperson Senator Nick McKim said.

"If this is true, Mr Dutton must take urgent action to ensure proper medical care is available to people who remain Australia's responsibility."

Liberals and ALP silent on Manus Island forced deportations

The Labor and Liberal Parties have voted down a Greens motion which opposed the forced deportations of people seeking asylum on Manus Island.

"Labor and Coalition Senators have today washed their collective hands of responsibility for people seeking asylum who have not had their applications for refugee status assessed in line with the Refugee Convention," Greens Immigration spokesperson Senator Nick McKim said.

"This was a motion supporting basic human rights for those who have already suffered too greatly at Australia’s hands."

"Reports of a deal with the US lack any detail whatsoever, but the idea of sending Muslim refugees to Donald Trump's USA raises some concerns."

"We also have no idea what would happen to people detained in the camps who have not been found to be genuine refugees."

Government confirms $20 million immigration jail being built on PNG

The Federal government has today confirmed it is spending $20 million building a new immigration jail in Papua New Guinea to open by the end of next year.

"This is on top of the $4 billion plus the government has confirmed has been spent on Manus Island and Nauru in the last three years."

Government stalls on resolution to Manus Island impasse

The Government continues to flail about with no solution for the stranded people in Australia's care on Manus Island, Greens Immigration spokesperson Nick McKim says.

"Two months ago, the Government pledged that the illegal Manus Island detention centre would close, and the men there would be resettled," Senator McKim said.

"It now appears that the Government is trying to weasel out of this commitment and the Papua New Guinea Supreme Court decision."
