Greens announce plans for a Charter of Rights

As Australians, we pride ourselves on enjoying so many freedoms, yet our laws do not adequately reflect, or protect them. Today the Australian Greens Leader, Dr Richard Di Natale and Attorney General Spokesperson, Senator Nick McKim announced their plan to table, debate and vote on Charter of Rights legislation in this term of parliament.  

Australia is the only western democracy that does not protect the basic rights and freedoms of its people in either legislation or the constitution, said Senator Di Natale.

Eric Abetz costs Tasmania a seat in Cabinet

The blame for Tasmania missing out on a seat in the federal Cabinet lies squarely on the shoulders of Senator Eric Abetz, Greens Senator for Tasmania Nick McKim says.

"If Senator Abetz had not used his de facto leadership of the Tasmanian Liberals to knife Richard Colbeck so brutally in the Liberal preselection battle, Tasmania would still have a voice at the Cabinet table."

"Not only has Senator Abetz managed to oversee a massive decline in the number of Tasmanian federal Liberal MPs, but he continues to undermine Malcolm Turnbull."

Senate Reform – Nick's Speech

I am very proud to rise to support the Commonwealth Electoral Amendment Bill 2016, legislation that puts the power over preferences back where it belongs in a democracy—that is, in the hands of the voters. It takes it out of the hands of the backroom wheelers and dealers now so beloved of the Labor Party and returns it to where it should be in our great democracy of Australia: in the hands of the voters. It is actually impossible to argue against this reform in a democracy whilst still maintaining any integrity whatsoever.
