Today Tasmanian Premier Will Hodgman gave a 40 minute speech in parliament called the “State of the State” speech.
It was an opportunity to set out the challenges facing Tasmania, and his responses to them.
But there was a big, a very big, elephant in the room that didn’t get a mention.
How could anyone talk about Tasmania today, while the fires in our wilderness are still burning, just days after many thousands of kids marched so bravely to demand climate action. and NOT MENTION CLIMATE CHANGE?
Folks, that’s the corrosive influence of political donations. The Liberals rake in millions of dollars a year in donations from the coal industry.
And it buys their silence, and buys their support for the Adani coal mine.
If we want strong action on climate change, we have to clean up politics.
And to clean up politics, we need to ban donations from big corporates who want to buy influence with their dirty money.
Then we might finally get some serious climate policies from the major parties.
