Forced deportations begin on Manus Island

The Australian government must urgently intervene to halt the forced deportation of Australia's detainees on Manus Island.

"Under the cover of darkness, at least one person seeking asylum has been forcibly removed from Manus Island," Greens Immigration spokesperson Senator Nick McKim said.

"With the illegal detention centre being forced to close and the uncertainty around the US 'deal', this seems to be Peter Dutton's only 'solution' to the humanitarian crisis he has overseen."

Senate demands the Government come clean on US "deal"

The Government has been ordered by the Senate to produce the details of its agreement with the United States to consider resettling some people Australia has detained on Manus Island and Nauru.

"The government has kept this agreement hidden from view, creating unnecessary uncertainty and anxiety for people who have already suffered far too much," Greens Immigration spokesperson Senator Nick McKim said.

"But from what is on the public record, it is clear that it doesn’t oblige the United States to accept a single person."

Parliament should have the power to block Trump

The Greens will move to amend Australia's visa laws to give Parliament the power to block foreign leaders from visiting Australia on the grounds of character.

"Parliament is sovereign in this country," Greens Immigration spokesperson Senator Nick McKim said

"Consistent with our position that Parliament should have the final say on Australia going to war, we believe that Parliament should have the right to refuse entry to, or deport, foreign leaders on the basis of their character."

"This issue has been crystallised for us by Donald Trump becoming US President."

Greens welcome united push against offshore detention

The Greens welcome the united front from the long list of community groups and organisations calling for immediate action on offshore detention.

Ditch the dud deal and bring the refugees to Australia

Malcolm Turnbull should scrap his refugee "deal" with the US and bring people detained on Manus Island and Nauru to Australia , Greens Immigration spokesperson Nick McKim says.

"It is becoming increasingly clear that Mr Turnbull is placing his faith in a xenophobic and anti-immigration US President who has a track record of dishonesty and lies," Senator McKim said.

"Only a fool would take Trump at his word."

End the US impasse, bring refugees to Australia

Malcolm Turnbull should end the uncertainty and confusion over the US refugee "deal" and bring the people to Australia, Greens Immigration spokesperson Nick McKim says.

"It is now clear that the US deal relies on an unhinged, dishonest President," Senator McKim said.

"People should be very concerned about what Mr Turnbull is prepared to do to get this deal done."

"As we now know, the deal does not commit the US to accept a single person."

Eric Abetz costs Tasmania a seat in Cabinet

Nick McKim 18 Jan 2017

The blame for Tasmania missing out on a seat in the federal Cabinet lies squarely on the shoulders of Senator Eric Abetz, Greens Senator for Tasmania Nick McKim says.

"If Senator Abetz had not used his de facto leadership of the Tasmanian Liberals to knife Richard Colbeck so brutally in the Liberal preselection battle, Tasmania would still have a voice at the Cabinet table."

"Not only has Senator Abetz managed to oversee a massive decline in the number of Tasmanian federal Liberal MPs, but he continues to undermine Malcolm Turnbull."

Audit Office confirms Dutton's department has gone rogue

The release of another scathing audit of the Department of Immigration and Border Protection confirms Peter Dutton has lost control of his portfolio and its budget, Greens Immigration spokesperson Nick McKim says.

"What a bloody shambles," Senator McKim said.

"This audit confirms that $1.1 billion of taxpayers' money was spent without proper authority, while there is no record of who authorised the spending of a further $1.1 billion."

"This is yet another indictment on Minister Dutton's capacity to manage the taxpayer dollars he has been entrusted with."
